At Amieira Marina you can set out to discover the great Alqueva lake aboard one of our houseboats or enjoy a meal at our restaurant with a lake view. I’m José Leal da Costa, and I want to share with you my favourite way to spend a holiday.

I was born in the United States, but my parents are from Évora, here in Alentejo. I always lived in the U.S. until I was 18 when I decided to come to Portugal to attend University. By then, my parents had returned too and created Amieira Marina, first with the houseboats and later with the panoramic restaurant.

Comfort and tranquillity are the top best features of the houseboats. It’s an incomparable experience. We can go to the beach, load the canoe on the houseboat and go canoeing, horseback ride, Stand Up Paddle.

We’re open all year, and people can cook their meals in the houseboat, or eat at the restaurant or order take away. Some of our guests make their food to go and set off to travel in the lake. There are lots to do in Alentejo. At first, people come to spend a day or two. Then they return because they realise they didn’t have time to enjoy all the experiences and activities.

The piers are open all year long, and you can go and get to know all the different lakeside villages. You can travel from one dock to the next and the route to Monsaraz is fascinating: it’s the fullest part of the lake, with several small islands that you can visit. But the journey is always the best part. You leave, stop for a swim, get back on the boat, then go a little further. You can even fish your own lunch and grill it. I invite everyone to experience this because it’s unparalleled.

Early in the evening, guests return with their skin all wrinkled because they’ve been inside the water all day! Some people do yoga on the Stand Up Paddle boards but I, at 26, am not that zen…

Our story and mission

Amieira Marina was established in 2003 and the restaurant in 2006. It started off slowly, but these days it has more of an international reach, with guests arriving from Germany, Ireland, and other North European countries, who come for our warm winters. We already owned a few houseboats in the United States, and they are very popular there. At Amieira Marina, the biggest houseboat has room for 12 people and the smallest, room for two to four. Then we have several intermediate-sized boats. Anyone can be part of this experience because all you need is a regular driver’s license to drive these boats. Nevertheless, we always provide some training first.

The trip from here to Monsaraz is about five hours long. So for the bigger trips, we sometimes refuel at a harbour further away so the client doesn´t have to return and can continue their journey. This way, you can spend more time on the boat, relaxing. In fact, the goal is to relax.

Being on a boat opens the door to a lot of different experiences, and once a group gets together on a boat, people develop a special bond with each other. The nights are spectacular! You can see stars you didn’t even know existed. Some of these lakeside villages have beaches. The Mourão beach is charming, it looks like an island, but I prefer to dive into the water from the boat - there’s no sand, and it’s more tranquil and private. The water is not cold, in the Summer the water temperature is about 27 degrees Celsius, but it’s enough to cool down.

Know the region

As a teenager, I lived in a city with ten million people, in the middle of Silicon Valley, but I spent all my Summers and Christmas Holidays in Alentejo - we’re a big family of over 30 people, and I remember you could hardly see the Christmas tree under all the presents.

The biggest highlight in Alentejo is eating and drinking. But in Amieira, the most significant highpoint is to be with people we cherish the most and spend time differently.

My pace is the same here as it was in the United States but people here are more at peace, they care more about family and life/work balance. I came to Portugal eight years ago, and it already feels like a lifetime. I love this part of Alentejo, and I will be here forever.

In the United States, people are always stressed. Here, we can get everywhere quickly. We’re never stressed, and, in general, we’re surrounded by good people. Definitely, there’s quality of life in Alentejo. We eat well, and we drink well. And, thanks to the rise in accommodation units, we sleep well!

The region known as Reserva Dark Sky (Dark Sky Reserve) was the first in the world to be named a “Starlight destination”, an international certification stating that this is an area with excellent conditions to see the stars. That reserve includes the municipalities of Mourão, Portel, Moura, Reguengos de Monsaraz, Alandroal, and Barrancos.
