When I was ten years old, I discovered the influence the sea could have over us, and I fell in love with Mira River. Today, I practically live inside water, and on my tours, I try to make people see the beauty of this place with their own eyes.

I worked in the Navy for 32 years and, when I retired, I wanted the sea to continue to be part of my life. I’ve always had a strong connection with the ocean and with Mira River, the place where I had some of the greatest moments of my life.

In 2017, I decided to start a business that I enjoyed and connected this passion of mine with my knowledge of the area. Touring Mira River was a dream that came true on June 12. I put NASA on the water for the first time that day and never stopped touring and showing people the secrets of this wonderful river.

It’s about 40 km of a river to explore, and that invites you to be in unique silence and balance with Nature. You will fall in love with this river of emotions, surrounded by spectacular scenery and inside a fully equipped, comfortable boat.

"We’re part of a Natural Park and, therefore, it’s impossible not to feel impressed by this virtually untouched scenery."

My boat is called NASA. Some may think the name is connected to space somehow, but it means something else. It’s the acronym of my daughter’s names, Nádia and Sara. I wanted them to be part of this project too, and I wanted them to be here even if indirectly. They keep me company on each ride through the name of the boat.

Our story and mission

I’m not originally from Vila Nova de Milfontes, but I moved here when I was ten and never lost the connection with this place. I’m from Alvaiázere, in the Leiria district, and for 32 years I worked in the Navy, in the communications department.

When I retired, I tried creating a business that pleased me and kept me busy. I don’t like to stand still for long, and it’s essential to me that I feel useful. It came to mind that I could join my excellent knowledge of this area and the river with my passion and connection with the ocean.

And that’s how River Emotions was born. On 12 July 2017, I put the boat on the water for the first time and have never stopped since then.

I have a deep respect Mira River and I do what I can every day to keep it exactly as it is. I defend the interests of those fighting for its preservation and I’m very involved with the local community.

Although I’m still a “novice” guardian, just starting to work to safeguard the beauty of this place, I’m passionate about what I do, and that’s also what makes the difference in the services I offer.

The richness of Mira River

"All I try to do is to show this treasure to whoever visits us."

Know the region

It’s a privilege to work in and with Mira River. It’s an extraordinary river that still keeps its natural features and shows very few signs of human intervention. You don’t see any buildings or constructions here which helps preserve the extremely rich fauna and flora. You can see the several species of fish and birds.

These surroundings are also unique because we’re part of the Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina Natural Park where it’s impossible not to feel influenced by the wildlife around us.

There’s an impressive silence along the river, where the only thing we actually hear is Nature talking.

I love the tranquillity and peace we have around here, and that’s what made me stay in Vila Nova de Milfontes. It’s a quiet and serene town, typical of Alentejo. I used to spend the week in Lisbon but would come here on the weekends to get away from the city stress and enjoy the purity of this region.

The beaches are great, and the fact that we are close to the ocean and the countryside is the best of both worlds. The food is the best in the country, especially the fresh fish from the coast.

All this southern strip of our coast that stretches from Sines to Cabo de São Vicente in Algarve is part of the Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina Natural Park. In this region, you’ll find unique and rare species of animals and plants, like the white stork that nests in seaside cliffs. This is the only place in the world where you can see it.
