At restaurant Quetzal, eyes eat first. But chefs Pedro Mendes and João Mourato, loyal to the Southern cuisine but with an approach of their own, will do everything to make sure your palate and your stomach are equally satisfied.

First comers may not know where to look first: the Viúva de Lamego tile panel at the end of the room depicting a colourful quetzal, or the vast windows facing the terrace and the vineyards in the bordering hill. The place is bright and airy, with light wood and enough room between tables, and a landscape that’s never tiring.

Alentejo cuisine is very simple with dishes like “peixinhos da horta” (green beans tempura), lamb stew, roasted lamb… If you think about it, they’re very simple dishes. And we wanted to recreate that simplicity: local food but presented in a more contemporary way.

It’s not just the local dishes we base our cuisine in, but the local ingredients too. We source some of the ingredients very close by. We use some of the herbs and flowers from our small garden that you can see from the terrace, and the flowerbeds around us.

We wanted to highlight the region, and you can tell that in such details as cooking our octopus with white wine, widely produced here, and in dishes like lamb, “peixinhos da horta” (green beans tempura), or local cheeses and sausages. For dessert, don’t leave without trying our house speciality, the almond sponge cake.

Quinta do Quetzal

Art, wine, and gastronomy at the top of the hill

The colours and scents of Quinta do Quetzal change with the seasons. The warm fragrance of the brown-eyed rockroses in the spring is replaced by the smell of must a few months later. At the same time, in the border hill, the vineyard goes from green, to red, and to complete bareness in the winter. Always under the unperturbed surveillance of the three pine trees.
