Ecotrails’ canoe tours are one of the best ways to know one of the most beautiful secrets of Alentejo: the Mira River. The strong sea influence makes it one of the best rivers for that type of activity, in the untouched natural scenery. With family or with friends, choose one of the several routes available and set off to venture through Mira River in harmony with Nature.
Ecotrails’ canoe tours are an invitation to discover the natural beauty of the Mira River. With the help of the tides, you can easily travel several kilometres in the river and finish all the stages of the route. We try to customise the tours the best we can, so we have different routes to choose from.
The most accessible route starts and ends in Odemira. It lasts for three to five hours, and it begins during the final two hours of the tide, which helps us reach the river mouth. In this area, the river is narrower and winding, the landscape is greener, and you’ll have more surprises: turtles sunbathing or some wild animals drinking water on the shore. We then return with the tide to Odemira.
The second route starts in Casa Branca, near São Luís, and ends in Odemira. This route is the wildest and it's twice the distance of the first one, so it could take up to four hours to complete. Casa Branca is well known in the area and used to be an old merchant port for olives and wheat.
The third route starts in Vila Nova de Milfontes, at the mouth of the river Mira, where the river is wider, and the winds are stronger because of the higher sea influence here.
In low tide, you’ll be able to observe local fauna in the sludge like crabs and seabirds. That route is three hours long, from Milfontes to Casa Branca.
To each one of these tours, you can add a picnic with local products and private camping. You can also explore other locations like the Santa Clara dam.
