A Terra (The Earth, in English) is our dream, me and my wife’s. A place that is offbeat and off tempo, an invitation to an eco-camping experience in a valley where Nature remains untouched.

We discovered this place when we were about to give up on finding our perfect land. I believe all things happen for a reason and in reality, that’s how we got here.

Anyone can feel the mystique in this area. When you begin to descend into the valley, past the entrance, you find this completely green and intact area, you start noticing the tipi tents here and there in the landscape, and then, after a narrow path, you come across a big lake. No one is indifferent to a scenery like this.

Claudia and I got married inside an Indian tent, and when we returned from England, our dream was to start our own ecotourism project. We were inspired by our travels. I believe this space is the culmination of many of the experiences we had abroad, like in India or Thailand. We carried over here everything that inspired us in those countries.

Those who come here will find quiet and silence, and a comfortable and family-friendly camping facility that calls for sharing. We can’t change the whole world, but we can start with what’s around us. Here, we show people how they can live sustainably, and we have plenty of free-range animals roaming around.

The people on our staff come from different places around the world. The cultural mix is part of our way of community life and a reflection of the overall spirit here.

All this comes together to provide guests with an inspiring and unique experience, disconnected from the outside world and living with the best the Earth (A Terra) shares with us every day.

"Everything here calls for a return to earth, to a place that disconnects us from the daily routine and connects us to Nature, to ecology. Here we feel connected to Nature."
Francisco de Brion

Every year, at the end of August, we organise Terra Gathering. A festival where we open the doors of this valley to several days of talks, workshops, music, food, and more. This event is only one way of trying to bring people back to Nature sharing the environment we experience here every day.

Our story and mission

I was born in Lisbon but was always very curious to see the world. I began travelling at a young age and later moved to England. I lived and worked in Brighton for a while, on a typical 9-to-5 job. Then came a time when I was fed up with it and realised I wasn’t living the life I wanted. I decided I needed to spend more time with the family and live according to our rules, and I returned to Portugal with my wife and children. When we discovered the place that is now A Terra we knew this was where we were going to make our dream come true.

I was an outdoor designer in England before I decided to return to Portugal. I believe A Terra is my masterpiece.

We founded A Terra six years ago, and it became our life project. It represents everything I believe in; a life of freedom, in tune with Nature, where sharing is the key word. I like to think that we inspire our guests to change their own lives someday. In the past, we welcomed guests that were stuck in the daily work routine and stayed with us for a few days. One year later, they bought land in Alentejo and are now our neighbours.

Did you request for Alentejo and a tent? We give you the Earth (A Terra)

"We aim to provide a comfortable camping experience. I want to show our guests how to live sustainably and in peace in Nature, respecting the ecosystem. "

Know the region

When I returned to Portugal, I explored the coast. I started in the Algarve, in Odeceixe, a few kilometres away from where we are, and continued upward until I reached Alentejo. I realised this was where I wanted to stay immediately, for the wilderness, for the purity, for the isolation, and for the beauty. I was blown away because Nature completely overtakes this part of the country. That is one of its best qualities, and we should preserve that above all.

Today, as a Guardian, I try to show this place as I saw it for the first time with unparalleled purity and authenticity.

Although we are in a sort of our world, our own refuge, Costa Alentejana and Costa Vicentina are 6km away. The wild beaches of the region and rivers Mira and Odeceixe are not just gorgeous, but they’re perfect for surfing or any other water sports. There’s still lots to explore and discover, but we love the atmosphere of the neighbouring cities of Zambujeira do Mar, Odeceixe, and São Teotónio. And the food is always one of the main attractions, both for visitors and for us who can’t live without these high-quality, wonderful products.

A Terra has a unique location so full of surprises that you don’t need to go elsewhere. Our fresh-water lake has its private beach and plenty of shade. It’s a fantastic spot to swim, sunbathe, have a picnic, or just enjoy the outdoors.
