Herdade do Freixial has been our family property for more than a century. There’s so much History that it’s difficult to trace back its roots. For many years it was rented to farmers, and when I inherited it from my parents, I thought this place was too special to keep it to myself.
It took a few years to make it what it is today. Besides the practically untouched landscape you see today, there was nothing but ruins that we rebuilt following the original plan and keeping the same design of typical Alentejo houses.
That’s how something more significant was born of a dream in 2008. It’s still the same place where we built long lasting memories, where Sofia picked oranges and lemons as a kid, and where I climbed many trees. But now it’s also a place where people come from all over the world to disconnect from the world.
The landscape has a profound impact and a calming effect the minute you get here. We take a deep breath, look ahead, and are in perfect balance with everything that surrounds us.
Late afternoons are my favourite time of the day to be here. I sit by the pool, facing the river, feeling the breeze, and waiting for the sun to set. It’s a very peaceful moment when you hear nothing else but the sounds of nature.
Here we are at home, at a place with centuries-old History that is ours but that we want to continue to enrich with every guest that stays with us.
“SOPA dos Artistas” is an association of independent artists that’s been very important to bring more culture into Herdade do Freixial. It’s a project with local artists that Sofia is a part of. They work to promote and showcase visual arts in Alentejo Litoral (Coastal Alentejo), and they host several events throughout the year like exhibitions, workshops, fairs, gatherings, and shows that instil life into the region.
Our story and mission
We lived in Lisbon, but the calling of our family roots was stronger and brought us to Alentejo. We used to spend holidays and weekends at Vila Nova de Milfontes before we moved here permanently. Herdade do Freixial, rented to other people then, was always our first stop. Like myself, my daughters built memories in this place, which made them want to be a part of my dream project.
Our History reflects our respect for our roots, the past, and the natural beauty of this place.
Sofia studied Fine Arts, lived a few years in the Canary Islands, in Switzerland, and in Lisbon, but her love for Alentejo always made her return. She’s always loved the property, and she realised she could still be a painter and an illustrator here while growing the business. Working as an artist, besides managing the property, she has a fundamental role in linking our activities and cultural events with the local community. Together with my youngest daughter Filipa, who studied Design and did a course as a Young Farmer, they’re both my right arms. As a family, we develop a solid work preserving and sharing with the world the best the property and the region have to offer.
From Past to Present
Here we are away from the city bustle. If we want, we can reach Vila Nova de Milfontes in ten minutes, with its own beauty and secrets to explore. We have great local cuisine restaurants, artisanal and handicraft shops worth visiting, and, of course, the beach so close by. It’s impossible not to feel touched by the diverse landscape and this quality of life in the Alentejo coast. We’re part of the Parque Natural, and in front of us, we have a green canvas with a window to river Mira, surrounded by an inspiring landscape and impressive biodiversity. It’s so overwhelming that sometimes it’s hard to describe it to people who’ve never visited.
Silence here is extraordinary. It comes with incredible peace of mind.
We’re fortunate to be so close to this beautiful river, 40 km long, full of valleys and meanders. You can navigate it until Odemira, and it’s lovely to stop in the middle of the trip to admire Nature.
Herdade do Freixial is 2 km from Vila Nova de Milfontes, on one of the banks of river Mira. Because of its strong maritime influence, you can navigate the river until Odemira. Just like the beaches in the area, the river is worth the visit by boat or canoe. Mira has many secrets to unveil.
