When we entered this spacious and bright room, that looked like an Alentejo tavern but had décor details that carried us to other destinations, we knew this project fit us.
The Ritual Tapas Bar was already a well-known successful business in the area. When we came along in 2014, we decided to keep the same concept: a cuisine of the world and to the world, with familiar faces that welcome you in the good Alentejo style.
In time, we gave the space a little more of our personalities. In the low season, we close the restaurant and travel for inspiration. Travelling is one of our biggest passions and, because of that, the décor, the atmosphere, and the food we serve reflect what we bring back from each place.
Today, it’s more than a restaurant. It’s an extension of our home. And the fact that we live upstairs makes it even cosier. We welcome customers as friends.
I love being in the room, talking to people. Luís is the chef coordinating everything that happens in the kitchen. His curiosity about food makes him continuously grow and search for new flavours.
We’re a young team, full of energy, and with a “good vibe”, as some people say. The door is always open, the music is always playing, and we’re always smiling.
It’s not just the door that’s always opened to the world. The walls also inspire you to travel the globe or in time. The many paintings, photographs, antiques, and souvenirs from our trips complement the food we serve.
Our story and mission
We were born in Lisbon and Porto, but we met in the Algarve. At the time, we each had our own restaurant in Sagres, but we realised our stories intersected in so many ways that there was no need to stay on different paths. We opened our first restaurant together in Aldeia de Pedralva, but it wasn’t long until we yearned for newer sceneries and moved to Vila Nova de Milfontes. The chance to take over Ritual Tapas Bar came along and, as we always do, we took the opportunity.
Ritual is the place we always dreamed of. All the pieces that build our story fit here.
This is where we share our passion for food, for Alentejo, and for the world. We see ourselves a lot in this place and the spirit of the region. We fight every day for the well-being of those living here and for valuing Costa Vicentina, which is magnificent. We believe our clients feel that too and end up taking a piece of us with them, our experiences, and this region. To be a guardian it's also that: to inspire, share, and make people want to return to experience it all again.
Where everyone feels at home
Our day-to-day life in town is unrushed. Everything is close by, from our daughter’s school to the market where we buy groceries every morning. This allows us to know our neighbours well and have a close relationship with our suppliers. Every ingredient at the restaurant is fresh, and we know each of them well. The butcher, where we source our meat, is five minutes away. The quality of the food we serve is influenced by where we are.
This region gifts us wonderful ingredients from land and sea.
With this perfect location comes a landscape and a climate that determine our cuisine and our quality of life. We’re between the mountain and the river, in a place that is as historic as it is beautiful. The beach, which we love so much, is right down the street. Here, the tranquillity and the family-friendly atmosphere join forces with the tourism that keeps the region moving forward and, therefore, we don’t miss anything. From all the places where we’ve been in the world, we chose this one to live in for a reason.
On the way to our restaurant, you’ll come across details from the past that deserve a closer look. Nossa Senhora da Graça church, right in the heart of the town since the 16th century, is one of the mandatory stops. It’s a typical Alentejo church, with whitewashed walls and blue baseboards, where the procession carrying the saints of São Sebastião and Nossa Senhora da Graça begins, until they’re carried up the Mira River in traditional boats.
