My wife and I came to Comporta for the first time at a time when no one had ever heard about this area. Until then, we spent our holidays elsewhere, abroad most of the times, and when we got here, we immediately felt we had found our secret little corner. It was the antithesis of what we usually saw - the wild beaches, Nature, friendly people, great food, and the best wine in the country. It was like finding a treasure that we never let go.
We bought land and designed a house meant for holidays with the family. But we soon realised that the house and the 17-hectare property were too big just for us and, because we always believed in Comporta’s potential, we decided to start the business Sublime Comporta. We began as a boutique hotel with just our house, the Main House, and today we have rooms, suites, villas, and guest villas all over the property, three restaurants, and one spa.
We’ve grown a lot and made great memories along the way. Sublime changed our lives. Here we found personal and professional achievements and made many friends who started as customers. Many stories made an impact on us, and that’s our inspiration. To serve people and foster these long-lasting relationships that make a difference.
Even though we’re not from Alentejo, we have strong feelings about the region, and we share its essence. Alentejo is the best part of Portugal, and that’s why we can offer comfortable and high-quality luxury in the middle of Nature, just like we dreamed.
At Sublime we ended up building several restaurants with different experiences. The Food Circle that we opened in 2018 is a good example. It’s in the middle of our organic garden with over 300 different species of herbs, vegetables, and edible flowers. We placed a round table for 12 people in the centre of the restaurant, where the chef cooks over an open fire. It’s a tasting menu prepared live and paired with Portuguese wines.
Our story and mission
I have many good memories since we started this project. Sublime changed our lives and, undoubtedly, for the better. I’m a pilot at TAP (Portuguese airline), and I proudly combine both jobs. I don’t see myself stopping to fly, because it’s my passion, but here I found a place where, as a family, we feel personally and professionally fulfilled.
My wife and I started to come to Comporta in 2002, and we fell in love with this place. Before, we spent our holidays elsewhere and here we found a little corner that was just right. We decided to look for a property, but we weren’t in a hurry. Two years later, we found this opportunity: an affordable land with enough trees and vegetation. We bought it, but we didn’t do anything about it immediately. We’re from Lisbon, and we live in Cascais, and we weren’t able to invest in our project before 2011.
The idea was to build a holiday home for the family and live here. In the meantime, we had children, and we needed to be closer to the family. We always believed this was the best part of the country and that Comporta had enormous tourism potential.
Although we’re not from Alentejo, we’re here with all our heart.
In 2014, we decided to turn our house into a small boutique hotel. Two years later we realised we could do more and do it better and took a massive leap of faith, building ten houses and the main building. Since then we never stopped, and the journey has been incredibly rewarding.
People ask me if I’m experienced in the hotel industry, and I end up saying yes because I’ve been sleeping in hotels all over the world for more than 20 years. I learned a lot from my experience as a guest. I believe that made all the difference in the project.
We’ve been fortunate to make friends who started as customers. We love sharing what this region does best, and I think we do it well. We offer what I call comfortable and high-quality luxury in the middle of Nature, with friendly people, great food, and excellent wine.
Comporta is a unique area of Alentejo. Today it’s a strong and recognisable brand abroad and even in Portugal. It’s trending and is widely promoted as a destination, with a very different offer from other areas in Alentejo.
Beaches are probably the region’s best asset. This vastness of sand and sea that stretches from Sines to Tróia is incredibly beautiful. It’s virtually untouched because there are no buildings close to the ocean, and it’s still very wild and with beautiful places to discover.
Wild beaches, Nature, and friendly people. What else could you ask for?
That side of Nature and an almost untouched region determines the success of Comporta. It still maintains its essence, and the absence of big buildings and crowds make you feel like you’re living on an island.
Then we have great restaurants and local businesses offering countless activities that showcase the best of the region. To me, a perfect day here has to include going to one of our beaches: Pego, Carvalhal, or Comporta. The more adventurous can go to Aberta Nova or Tróia.
The villas at Sublime Comporta are inspired by the traditional cabins that once filled the landscape. These typical little houses made of straw, wood, reed, or brick, with thatched roofs, are part of the History of the region and they continue to be recreated and honoured to this day.
